Web Reading Record - "The Story of a Gal Who Was Living Life to the Fullest Falling in Love with a Kind Introverted Boy"

As a reader of Kenji Miyazawa who is not particularly experienced, I have only casually read a few fairy tales such as "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and his most famous poems like "Be Not Afraid of the Wind and Rain" and "Spring and Asura." Aside from the poem "Sakura," which introduced Miyazawa to me (and likely to the majority of people), I have not encountered other works that satisfied me. "Not Losing to Gal" resembles a tourism guide for Iwate Prefecture too much, and other works at most only mention the well-known "Be Not Afraid of the Wind and Rain" or adapt the story of "Night on the Galactic Railroad."

The most outstanding and only commendable aspect of this work is the creation of a "Miyazawa-style" male and female protagonist within a very clichéd template story, cleverly adapting two works of Miyazawa with vastly different levels of recognition: "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and "The Morning of Farewell." The adaptation of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" serves the plot. The author uses the relationship between Giovanni and Campanella as a starting point, integrating it into the relationship depiction of this work through the form of a stage play, with the climax of the play written in a quite vivid manner. The adaptation of "The Morning of Farewell," on the other hand, serves to shape the characters. The poem depicts Miyazawa's sister, who, before her death, still worries about her brother and actively expresses her desire for the icy rain outside to alleviate her brother's helpless pain. Both of them place others above themselves, which is something the male protagonist has always done and the female protagonist begins to do after the incident and ultimately achieves.

Unfortunately, if the early story of this work were not so clichéd and the character portrayals were more balanced (I would like to specifically mention the issue with the female protagonist's portrayal, which ranges from quite frivolous to extremely affectionate; while it is very engaging, the transition lacks persuasiveness. The issue with the male protagonist's mother is also poorly handled, leading to a mess), I would give a higher rating. However, one shouldn't have too high expectations for web content.
